Just like the best stereo systems, the best computer systems are made from individual matched components. Because each part does just one job, component systems are faster — and the faster your system goes, the longer it lasts.
All-in-one systems are cheap, but they are difficult to upgrade and can be almost impossible to repair. In the long run, it costs less to do it right the first time.
why standards matter
Industry-standard cases take industry-standard components. If you have one, you can upgrade any time you like, and if you ever need a repair, any good computer shop keeps the parts in stock.
Proprietary micro-tower cases look neat and tidy in the showroom, but they just don't have the space you need for cooling and expansion.
If you are stuck with a non-standard system, you can't upgrade it, and the proprietary parts it takes are usually so expensive that you can't afford to repair it once it goes wrong.
Proprietary systems come into the Red Hill workshop for repair or upgrade regularly, and in many cases there is nothing we can do. Sometimes the parts are simply unavailable, sometimes we still can get them to special order but the cost is so high that it is cheaper to simply throw the whole thing away and build another one.
